Step 1 – Assemble the pattern and cut out pieces
Please read through all the directions before beginning this pattern.
You will need to assemble the pattern. For instructions on how to assemble the pattern click here.
You will need to cut out the following: You will need to cut out 1 of the handle. 2 of the pockets, 1 of the body out of fleece.
Step 1.5 – Ruffle fabric prep.
Because ruffle fabric is stretchy you’ll need to mount it onto fleece to get it to work. Plus it makes bonus outside pockets! When cutting the ruffle fabric make sure that the ruffles are laying flat to ensure a good pattern shape.
Step 2 – Reinforce the edges.
We aren’t finishing the edges so but a zig sag stitch will help keep the fleece from stretching too much..
Using a zig zag stitch, stitch along the edges of the handle, the top curve of the pocket and along the top curve of the purse on each end ( do this for both the fleece and the ruffle knit)
Step 3 – Sew on the side pockets
With wrong side of the pocket to the right side of the handle , pin the pocket to each end of the handle. Then Sew along each side of the pocket (except for the top curve this is the opening) using a .25 inch seam allowance. Set aside.
Step 4 – Build the exterior
If you aren’t using the ruffle fabric you can skip to step 6.
Place the ruffle fabric on top of the fleece with wrong side together. Pin Fabric in place. Note that the middle of the purse body is the bottom of the purse. Because the middle of the purse is the center, the outside pieces are the sides of the purse. This is important when using ruffle fabric, because you will want the ruffles to fall down the purse once it’s assembled.
When you pin the ruffle fabric to the fleece, make sure to pin the ruffles toward the center or middle of the purse body.
Sew the ruffle fabric to the fleece by Sewing down the sides of the purse using a .25 inch seam allowance, leaving the tops of the purse (curved edges) open. this is to make sure the ruffles stay laying in the right direction.
Step 5 – Stitch closed
To make the ruffle fabric exterior function as a pocket hold the purse body pattern up to the fabric – you will see two lines on the pattern – these are rough guides where you can sew to make the bottom of the pocket. Find the closest ruffle to the line and pin it back. Then using the built in lines of the fabric as a guide, sew straight across the purse to make the bottom of the pocket. Repeat for other side.
Step 6 – Add the handle
With right sides together, line up the bottom of the handle with the center of the purse body. Pin.
Then continue to pin each side of the purse. repeat on other side.
Then sew handle and purse together, suing a .5 inch seam allowance.
Step 7 – finishing up
Trim corners of pockets, turn right side out, trim threads and you are finished!

I’ve been wanting a pattern for a hobo bag – it’s my favorite style of purse. I’m going to have to lenghten the handle, though, because I like longer straps. (BTW, “handle” is misspelled in the PDF as “handel.”)
and I spelled “lengthen” wrong. Oops
I love this bag. My little boy loves bags and this is exactly something I can personalize for him 🙂
Hi – I hope this message can find you all well. It seens that the pattern is no t available anymore. I am from Brazil. I am still interested in having it. It is possible to have a copy by e-mail?
