You can find instructions on how to assemble the pattern here.

Cut out both of the pattern pieces for the Owl hat. You will need to cut out 4 of the owl ear, 1 of the owl nose or beak, 2 of the owl pupil, and two of the owl eye. Please take your time cutting out the owl eyes, pupils and beak as we will be using them for applique and you’ll want clean cuts so it will look good.

Step 2: Attach the Owl Eyes and Beak

We’re going to do some basic and quick applique for the eyes and beak. First we’re going to assemble the eyes. Layout the eyes and place the pupils where you want them on your Free Owl Hat Craft Pattern. Pin. Then using a zig zag stitch along the edge of the pupil, sew on. Then place the eyes on the right side of one of the hat pieces. Pin. Sew on using zig zag stitch along the edge of the fabric of the eyes. Repeat with the nose/ beak.

Please note that for demonstration reasons I’ve used contrasting thread – but I recommend you use a thread that matched the pupil color.

Step 3: Pin and Sew the Owl Ears

Taking and ear pieces, put right sides together and Pin. For a baby hat use a .5 inch seam, for a child or adult hat use a .25 inch seam. Sew together using a straight stitch. Trim point taking car not to cut through your stitches. Turn right side out.

Step 4: Place the ears and make the free fleece hat

Create a fleece owl hat with FleeceFun’s easy tutorial and free pattern

Place and pin the ears where you would like them to be on the Fleece Hat with Owl Design (a third of the way down seams to work well). You want the tops of the ears facing in, sitting on the right side of the fabric, you will then place the other half of the hat (right side down) on top.Using a 1/2 inch seam allowance, sew each side of the hat (the long curved side to the point before it dips into a “V”.

Be sure to leave the bottom (the brim) open. Now that you’ve sewn the sides of the hat it’s time to close the top. Fold the hat in half so the seams you just sewed are touching. Pin the “v” on each side closed. Sew one seam along the top of the hat closing the v on both sides. (This will make a rounded top.)Turn the brim edge under 1 inch (or more/less if you like) pin and sew a zig-zag stitch over the edge of the fabric. Snip any loose threads and turn right side out.

Tada! Your DIY Fleece Owl Hat is finished.

Quick Tip

Because of the layers, sew slowly over the sections with the ears – it will keep the stitches more even.

  2. Your fleece owl pattern saved my son’s Halloween costume! I had made the Simplicity pattern 1766 owl costume, but I couldn’t figure out their hat pattern. Without your pattern/tutorial I would have had to buy him an unmatching store bought owl hat. Thank you, thank you, thank you! It was so much fun (and quick) to sew I think I’ll make them for my niece and nephew for Christmas.

  3. Hello, I have used your pattern and tutorial to sew the owl hat for my daughter. She has been wearing it for the second winter already and we both love it. I had a great fun sewing it. Thanks a lot for the pattern! Next time, I will try to make a scarf for me 😉
