1 – Cut out Pattern and begin to sew

I like to cut out the pocket from a contrasting fleece color and the lining from flannel.  (having the lining also from fleece is very bulky.)  Turn under the lining (flannel) .5 inch and zigzag across, securing the edge.

2 – Add the cording

If you’re not using cording skip to second part of this step.Personally I love how cording looks next to fleece. There’s something about cording that says “pro”.  Here is how I sew cording.I pin the cording in place on the right side of the fabric. Lining the edge of the cording up with the edge of the fabric.  I like to start at the bottom of the pocket.Using a zipper foot, I sew right next to the cording all the way around the cover. (The needle is on the left side of the foot,  and the foot is butted up next to the cording)If you are capable of sewing cording and two pieces of fabric together at the same time – you are awesome, I bow down to you – I can’t.  =)

Pin the lining to the pocket right sides together. With cording, use a zipper foot, butt foot up against cording and sew together.  The tighter, closer you are to the cording the better it will look – take your time to make it look right.

Turn the pocket right side out and admire your work!

3  – Top Stitch

Whether you are doing the cording or not – follow this step.On the right side of the top piece of fabric, using your zipper foot butt the right side up against the cording and have the needle on the left.  This will give you some nice top stitching that will make your cording pop.No cording – top stitch .5 inches from the edge of the fabric.Tip – Make sure the lining doesn’t fold up under the needle – I like to pin a little to prevent this from happening.

4 –  Add a button

Fold and pin the pocket down to gauge where you should place the button.  Mark, unfold and sew on the button.
Fold back down and pin into position.  Using previous top stitching at a guide, sew along to secure the top of the pocket down.

5 – Add Pocket to your Canopy

I recommend adding the pocket to your canopy before top and bottom together.  In other words between steps 2 and 3 on the baby car seat canopy pattern.

But you can add it after the fact – just be very careful that the fabric is flat and well pinned.
Sew on following the top stitching on the sides and you’re done!
Tip: You can also add a pocket to the interior lining to add some personality when the tent is flipped up.
