Perfect for spring and summer this skirt has a lovely drape to it.

Knit skater skirts are super easy to sew, and are flattering on nearly all body types. They are also very comfortable to wear and can be dressed up or dressed down with different accessories and layers. This skater skirt is a half circle skirt, rather than a true circle. This means it takes up quite a bit less fabric! The waistband is a yoga style band, sewn from cotton lycra. You can wear it folded over, like I do here, or pulled up for a tummy tucking effect. It is very ‘post baby’ friendly, and can also be used as maternity wear!

1 yard knit fabric (60″ wide) for skirt. A lightweight knit will drape nicely.

1/4 yard contrast knit fabric for waistband. This fabric must have a minimum of 50% stretch and good recovery. I suggest cotton lycra or nylon spandex.

Seam allowances are 3/8″.

Can be made in under an hour.To assemble the skirt, stitch the side seam, right sides together, to form a donut-like shape. ( Be sure to use a stretch stitch or a zig zag stitch if your machine doesn’t do a stretch stitch).

Step 3 – Sew the waistband

Fold the waistband in half so the short sides ( and right sides) are touching.

With right sides facing, sew the short ends of the waistband together to form a loop.

Step 4 – Bring the women’s skirt together

Take the waist band and Fold it over, wrong sides touching. Turn the skirt right side out.

Pin the waistband to the right side of the skirt. First line up the seams and pin then continue to pin the waistband to the half circle skirt. You will need to slightly stretch the waistband to fit it to the skirt. Stitch.

Since knit fabric doesn’t fray, you can leave the bottom hem plain, or do a narrow hem, or a rolled hem on your serger if you prefer. I left my bottom edge raw.

That’s it!  I love how fast and comfortable this skirt is, as a matter of fact it’s so great that there’s an child version of this skirt as well!  You can check out that Free Pattern here.

This free patterns requires knit with a good stretch to it ( 50%) typically that means that it should be a lycra blend for best results.
