The staff glows in the dark and adds a fun spooky look. Because of the detailing on the staff be sure to allow yourself enough time to complete this project.

By the way I have this Maleficent Minnie Ears Tutorial – you could easily make without the ears to make the horns for your costume!

Glowing Maleficent Staff DIY

Step 1 – Begin to build up the Staff with “Vines”

Take a portion of aluminum foil

and roll it up into a thick cylinder.

Wrap the aluminum foil cylinder around the dowel like a vine.

Hot glue in place.

Repeat with sections of aluminum foil, connecting vines at the ends, sides, looping them over each other and hot gluing them in place.

At the base of the dowel, “finish” each vine with a ball of aluminum foil hot glued in place, protruding partially from the dowel.

Make a small cone of aluminum foil and bend it slightly, forming a claw. Hot glue this in place on the partially protruded ball of aluminum foil.

Wrap aluminum foil around the claw and ball to create a more smooth transition from vine to claw. Hot glue in place.

Step 2 – Add texture to Maleficent’s Staff

Mix ½ cup glue with 1 cup of water in the large bowl.

Dip strips of tissue paper into the water/glue mixture and gently squeeze out the extra moisture.

Continue covering all of the aluminum foil with the tissue paper, creating a paintable surface.

Once all of the aluminum foil is covered, allow the dowel to dry completely by placing it in front of a fan. This may take 24 hours or more to dry, so please test it before moving forward.

Step 3- Paint the Staff

This will make the staff look like it has more depth and life. Allow brown paint to dry completely.

Dry brush the high points of the staff with grey paint, leaving the brown and black in the deeper parts of the staff. Allow brown paint to dry completely.

Step 4 – Make the Glowing Orb to the staff

Paint the inside of both sides of the fillable ornament with the glow in the dark glue.

When the glue becomes tacky, dry brush on green,

black and yellow paint in streaky areas. Allow paint and glue to dry completely.

Stuff the fillable ornament full of the clear package wrap and close the ornament.

Hot glue to keep it closed.

Affix the ornament to the end of the staff with hot glue.

Step 5 – Meld the Orb to the Rest of Maleficent’s Staff

Using the paper clay, form a cone and continue the vine structure from the dowel up onto the ornament,
