When I was 17 I got to live in Nottingham, England. My grandfather was a university professor and had done a teacher exchange. He, my grandmother and my aunt were living in England and I joined them. On the weekends we would travel to London to see the sites. I confess I consider this a magical time in my life – seeing touching and being in places I had only seen in history books. This was also the place that many of my ancestors came from. I could feel the connection to the land and the people in my bones. In many ways it was like visiting home. A home with really good chocolate and jacket potatoes.
I know where many of ancestors come from because of the amazing work my family has done tracing their genealogy. I’ve heard stories of some traveling to far places so they can look up names in bibles and books. Still in this day and age, original research needs to be done to trace families. Not only is this time consuming – but its costly and not easily affordable.
Family search is trying to make things easier to find names to help people trace their genealogy. In the digital age there are still amazing amounts of records that while are scanned, need a human eye to look at the handwriting. You can help preserve history! Family search is hosting a “World Records” Indexing event July 15 to the 17 where people from all over the internet will help index records and preserve important names and dates. They need your help! To take part just visit this page to find out more.
The process is very simple and it’s a great way of taking a little time out of your busy schedule to help a worthy cause. While you’re there why not hunt around and see if you can find where your ancestors are from? You might find a few surprising characters in your family line.
