My son recently started preschool and has been introduced to the world of Pokemon. He loves the interesting characters and was so excited when I sewed him up a Pokemon inspired outfit. The star of the whole outfit is his backpack, and I want to share with you a pattern to make your own. It makes a perfect holiday gift for a toddler or preschooler in your life.

I used a medium weight twill to construct this version, but any medium weight fabric would work well. I would suggest not going with something too heavy; you may not be able to sew through all the layers if your machine doesn’t do thick fabrics well.

The bag is fully interfaced and lined with a quilting cotton. I added piping to all the seams to make them pop and it closes with a zipper. I’ve constructed it in a way that there is no hand stitching!

The details on the straps give it an authentic look. The straps themselves are padded with 1/2″ foam. I used webbing to complete the straps and added some reflective trim to the raw ends. You can use sliders to make the straps adjustable (I improvised with buckles when my local store was out).

Because of the zip, interfacing, and the multiple layers, this pattern is an intermediate level project. For your free pattern and tutorial, click here.
