Pokeball Backpack Tutorial

Step 1 – Begin to Sew the Straps

You will need to assemble the pattern.  For instructions on how to assemble the free sewing pattern click here.

All seam allowances are 1/2″.

Apply interfacing to outer fabric for Upper Back, Lower Back, Front, Lower Gusset and Upper Gussets.

With right sides together, sew two straps pieces together along the long 2 edges. Trim seam allowance to 1/8″.

Place the foam on the strap (still wrong side out). Stitch through all layers at one of the short ends. Trim seam allowance and clip corners.

Turn fabric over the foam. I found it easy using a ruler. Push out corners.

Stitch down the center of the strap through all layers.

Thread a 7″ piece of webbing through the strap slider. Fold over one raw end and stitch to secure.

Center webbing over the strap assembly with the strap slider just over the finished edge. Topstitch webbing along sides and bottom edge.

Cover top raw edge of webbing with piece of reflective trim.

Thread a 14″ piece of webbing through the other side of the strap slider. Finish one raw edge.

Step 2 – Assemble the back

Baste top end of strap assembly to lower back as shown. Baste unfinished edge of webbing to side as marked on the pattern piece.

Stitch upper back to lower back, right sides together.

Press seam allowance down and topstitch. Trim seam allowance.

Baste a 7″ piece of webbing to the upper back to form a hanging loop using placement markings on pattern piece.

Apply piping to outside edge.

Step 3 – Assemble the Front

Use double sided adhesive to position the Poke ball pieces onto backpack front.

Secure them in place with a tight zigzag around all raw edges.

Apply piping to outside edge.

Step 4 – Zipper

Zipper:

Sandwich zipper between outer and lining upper gusset pieces with right side of zipper facing right side of outer fabric. Stitch beginning 1/2″ from edge and ending 1/2″ before the other edge.

Press open and repeat with other side.

Step 5 – Putting it All Together

Putting it all together:

Apply piping to short ends of outer lower gusset.

Sew outer lower gusset to outer upper gusset. Do NOT catch the lining upper gusset in this seam.

Stitch outer gusset to outer front, right sides together.

Repeat with outer back.

Repeat previous steps with lining fabric, but leave a 4″ opening along one of the side seams for turning.

Turn right side out through opening.

Stitch up opening by machine or by hand stitching for a cleaner look.

Congratulations for finishing a difficult project!
