YOU WILL NEED:
- 1/2 yard cotton lycra stretch jersey knit. Other knits can be used, but be sure it has at least 50% stretch and good recovery.
- Sewing Essentials (pins, scissors, etc.)
- Sewing Machine
- Get the free pattern here.
step 1 – cut the pattern
1 front on fold, 1 back on fold (use the dashed line for the back neck), 2 sleeves on fold, 1 neckband
step 2 – sew the shoulder seams
Seam allowances are 1/2″. Sew shoulder seams together with right sides facing.
step 3 – sew the neck band
Sew short end of neck band, right sides facing, to form a loop.
Fold neck band in half (wrong sides facing) and mark the 1/4 points with pins.
step 4 – pin the neckband
Mark the neckline of the tee into fourths, and pin the neckband to the neckline, right sides together.
step 5 – sew the neckline to the baby t shirt
Stitch and press seam allowance to the shirt. You can also topstitch this seam if you like.
step 6 – fold sleeve and bottom hem
Fold under and press 1″ of sleeve and bottom hem. Do not stitch yet.
step 7 – sew the sleeve to the baby t shirt
Sew sleeve to armscye, right sides together.
step 8 – sew the underarm and side seam
Next, sew underarm and side seam.
step 9 – complete the baby t-shirt!
Stitch hems with a zigzag, double needle, or other stretch stitch.
Congratulations, you have now successfully completed sewing your own baby t-shirt!
