It’s no secret that toddler clothes are expensive. And while it may be tempting to just buy them all, there are some definite advantages to sewing your own toddler shorts. For one, you can control the quality of the materials used. You can also choose exactly the style, fit, and functionality that you want. Plus, making your own toddler shorts is a great way to save money in the long run.

YOU WILL NEED:
They are a simple elastic waist shorts sewn out of knit fabric. I used some cotton sweatershirt fleece, but you can also use interlock, jersey knit or french terry. They would also make a great upcycle project out of old sweatshirts or tees! While I’ve left mine plain, you can easily embellish them with simple patch pockets, applique, or ribbon.
- 1/2 yard of medium weight knit fabric (sweatshirt fleece, french terry, jersey knit, interlock, etc.)
- Sewing Essentials (pins, scissors, etc.)
Cut
Little boys seem to destroy (and grow out of!) clothes faster than I can buy or make them, but these simple shorts will give you the upper hand! You can make these toddler shorts in under 20 minutes! This free shorts pattern for toddlers makes it easy.
Cut the following:
- Elastic (18 month = 17.5″, 2T = 18″, 3T = 18.5″, 4T = 19″)
- 2 shorts pieces, mirror image of each other

Sew the Free Shorts Pattern For Toddlers
step 1 – Begin to sew the shorts pattern
Seam allowances for the Free Shorts Pattern For Toddlers are 3/8″ or 1 cm. Use a serger or ballpoint needle and stretch stitch on a regular sewing machine. A walking foot can be helpful when sewing with knits.
With right sides together, pin and stitch front and back crotch seam. It can be easy to sew the inseam instead of the crotch seam, but I’ve placed a notch on the back crotch to help you stay orientated.
step 2 – Sew the legs of the toddler shorts
Keeping right sides together, align shorts so that the crotch seams are lined up and the inseams are together. Pin these seam. You’ll be sewing up one leg and down the other.
Stitch inseam.
step 3 – Begin to sew the waistband
Butt the edges of the elastic together and join with a wide zigzag. Divide the elastic into 4 and mark with pins.
step 4 – Add the elastic to shorts waist
Divide the waist of the Free Shorts Pattern For Toddlers into 4 and match up with the elastic. Pin in place with the elastic facing the wrong side of the shorts.
Serger or zigzag the elastic along the edge while stretching the shorts to fit the elastic.
step 5 – Finish the waist
Flip the elastic towards the inside. It will no longer be visible. I like to tuck a small piece of ribbon in the under the elastic to mark the back to help your child know the front/back.
Stitch the elastic down, stretching as you sew.
step 6 – Finish the bottom of the shorts
Fold the bottom hem 3/4″ to the wrong side. Press in place.
Stitch hem and give shorts a final press.
