This Stretchy Baby Car Seat Cover Pattern sews up quickly! With easy to follow step by step instructions and a free sewing pattern, this easy sew will be your go to baby gift! So easy you can make several canopies in one sitting. This stretchy baby car seat cover pattern is perfect for multitasking.  It can double as a nursing cover.  I love this lighter cover that is perfect for warmer weather, while still keeping the baby away from breezes, the sun or prying eyes.  Make a few in one sitting so you can easily rotate and wash them.

For This Project you will need:

1 yard of jersey knit (58″ wide with a 50% stretch – This is the fabric I used)

Fleece Fun’s Free Pattern (available at the end of the post)

Double needle (not necessary but nice to have)

Sewing Essentials (scissors, pins, etc.)

Step 1 – Cut out the Cover

Assemble the free sewing pattern pdf.  You can find detailed instructions about that here. On the fold  cut out 2 of the pattern. Be sure that the fabric is flat and there are no wrinkles in it.

Note: When you cut out the pattern that you refold the cloth so you can cut out two side by side on the 58″.  Don’t just rely on how it was folded on the bolt or you’ll cut a hole in the middle and not have enough to cut a second piece.

Step 2 – Begin to Sew the Baby Canopy

Using a 3/8 seam allowance and  stretch stitch on your sewing machine (or serger) sew the sides of the baby car seat cover.  If you machine doesn’t have a stretch stitch a zig zag stitch will work.

Be sure to leave the top and bottom (where it’s marked in pink on the sewing pattern) open.

Step 3 – Finish the top and bottom

Turn the top and bottom under 3/4 of an inch.

Press and pin so it will hold it’s shape.  You can also use HeatNBond Softstretch tape to make the process easier.

As this point you can either sew a zig zag stitch along the edge of the top and bottom to finish. Or…

You can turn it right side out and top stitch with a double needle,

the bottom and the top of the baby car seat canopy.

Trim away any excess for a clean look. Tip: These sew up so fast I like to sew several in one sitting.  They make great baby shower gifts and as a mom it’s always nice to have extra in case one is in the wash.

That’s it you’ve just completed the Stretchy Baby Car Seat Cover Pattern DIY.

Can you use a Car Seat Cover as a Nursing Cover?

Yes I’ve used this cover also as a nursing cover.  I love the breath-ability of the fabric for baby and how my back is also covered when nursing in public.

How to you use a Stretchy Car Seat Cover?

It’s like a tent over the baby.  Put the car seat bassinet bar upright for carrying. Have the sun shade also pulled out so it’s covering the car seat. Simply line up the opening at the top with the bar.  Pull the fabric down gently around the seat so it stretches all the way to the bottom forming a tent/ cocoon around the baby.
