Classic Batman Cape Costume Tutorial DIY
Your little one can be the dark knight with this Batman Cape Costume Tutorial DIY. With a few simple pieces you can easily make this classic costume. To complete the look you can purchase an iron on logo here.
Batman is one of the most popular of comic book heroes, and his popularity has only increased with recent movies. My little guy doesn’t read comic books yet, but is familiar with the Lego Batman, so he was thrilled to get his own costume!
I’ve included instructions and printable pattern pieces for the cape, mask, and belt. The cape is sewn from any lightweight woven fabric. If you are feeling adventurous, find something shiny, or use broadcloth or cotton for an easier sew. The cape has the iconic scallops along the bottom edge and ties at the neck with bias tape. As always, only use the cape under supervision as the ties can be a choking hazard.
The mask and the belt are sewn from either fleece or felt. The advantage of these materials is that they don’t fray so you don’t have to finish the raw edges.
The pattern is sized for children ages 2-5. I sewed my son a grey long sleeved tee and leggings to go with the costume, but you can always purchase these if you are running short of time.
Materials needed:
mask:
12″ black 1/2″ elastic
2 grommets/eyelets (optional)

1 1/3 yards of lightweight black woven fabric (44″ wide). You can use a synthetic shiny fabric (fabric meant for lining garments is inexpensive but can be slippery) or broadcloth/cotton for an easier sew
1 package 1/2″ double fold bias tape
belt:
1/4 yard yellow fleece or felt
3″ Velcro
Sewing Essentials (pins, scissors, etc.)

Step 1 – Make the Cape
You will need to assemble the pattern. For instructions on how to assemble the sewing pattern click here.
Cut out 2 cape pieces (on the fold).Pin wrong sides facing along two side and bottom scalloped edge. Stitch.
Carefully trim all the points of the scallops and clip the curves.
Turn right side out and press. Topstitch along side and bottom edge. Baste neck opening closed.
Cut a piece of bias tape 1 yard long. Find the center of the bias tape and the center of the cape. Pin bias tape closed over the neck edge of the cape. Stitch bias tape closed along edge.
Step 2 – Make the Mask
Cut 2 mask pieces.
Pin mask pieces wrong sides together and sew along raw edges (including around eyes).
Create holes for the strap as marked on the pattern. You can use gommets/eyelets, sew buttonholes, or just cut 2 small holes.
Feed elastic through holes. Try the mask on your model and adjust length of elastic as needed. Tie elastic in place.
Step 3 – Make the Belt
Cut a 3″ strip of yellow fleece long enough to go around your model’s waist + 1″. Cut out two belt buckle pieces and pin wrong sides together and sew along raw edges.
Pin belt buckle on the center of the belt and stitch in place over previous stitching lines.
Sew strips of Velcro on the back edges as shown.
