Your little intergalactic princess will love this Star Wars inspired DIY Princess Leia Costume. Not only is this costume and easy sew – it’s fast to make. throw your little one’s hair in a two buns and she’s good to go.

YOU WILL NEED:

For the Dress:

1 5/8 yard white fleece, or any other white knit fabric
20″ of 1/2″ braided elastic

For the Belt:

1/4 yard metallic faux leather
3″ Velcro, 1″ wide
Sewing Essentials (pins, scissors, etc.)
Sewing Machine

DIY Princess Leia Costume Free Pattern Tutorial

Step 1 – Begin the Princess Leia Dress

You will need to assemble the pattern. For instructions on how to assemble the sewing pattern click here.

Pin sleeve to the front at the shoulder seam, right sides together. Stitch.

Repeat with the other sleeve, then attach the back in the same way. You now have something that looks like this.

Step 2 – Create the neckline for the Princess Leia dress

From the casing for the neck elastic, fold the neckline edge 3/4″ to the wrong side. Pin in place.

Stitch, leaving a 1″ opening for inserting the elastic.

Use a safety pin to insert the elastic and thread it through the casing. Zigzag the raw ends of the elastic together.

Sew the opening in the casing closed.

Hem the bottom edge and sleeve edges if you wish, or leave it raw, the fleece won’t fray.

Step 3 – Finish the Dress

Sew each side of the dress.

Step 4 – Make the Princess Leia Costume Belt

Stitch around the outside of the circle with a straight stitch to secure them in place.

You will have 7 medallions: 6 square ones and 1 pentagon shape for the center.

Glue the medallions to the belt. The pentagon shaped medallion goes in the center, and the square ones are spaced 1″ apart on the sides. Stitch the medallions in place along the outside edge.

Try on the belt and adjust the length by trimming if needed. Sew Velcro strips to the short ends with a zigzag stitch.
