This Supergirl costume tutorial is fast and easy to make! As far as super heroes go the Super Girl is amazing. She has all the abilities of Superman, but can remember life on Krypton. She loves to serve and protect and is faster than a speeding bullet.
When I asked my 6 year old what superhero she would like to dress up as, she quickly replied, “Superman, but like Superlady, because I’m a super lady”! So I designed a feminine version of the classic Superman look for her to wear.
The simple half circle cape is sewn from inexpensive and easy to sew broadcloth. It has two layers and is finished at the neckline with a bias tape ribbon. If you are a more adventurous sewist, you can choose a satin for a shiny look.
The skirt is also sewn from the same broadcloth, and is a classic elastic waist gathered skirt. I’ve included templates to sew this skirt in sizes 2-6.
I’ve sewn the belt from a thick ponte knit, but you can also use felt or fleece. These materials are great for costumes because they do not fray so you don’t have to worry about seam finishes!
To complete the costume, I’ve paired these pieces with a tutu skirt I’ve previously made, some black knee high boots, and 3/4 length blue tee that I sewed using my Petra Tee & Dress pattern.
Materials needed:
cape:
1 1/3 yards of lightweight red woven fabric (44″ wide). You can use a synthetic shiny fabric (fabric meant for lining garments is inexpensive but can be slippery) or broadcloth/cotton for an easier sew
1 package 1/2″ double fold bias tape
skirt:
1/2 yard of light to medium weight red fabric, 44″ wide
1/2 yard of 1″ non roll elastic
belt:
1/4 yard yellow fleece or felt
3″ Velcro
Superman logo patch (available here)
Sewing Essentials (pins, scissors, etc.)
How to make a Super Girl Costume:
Step 1 – Make the Cape:
You will need to assemble the pattern. For instructions on how to assemble the sewing pattern click here.
All seam allowances are 3/8″.
Cut out 2 cape pieces (on the fold). Pin wrong sides facing along two side and bottom curved edge. Stitch. Trim the corners and clip the curves.
Step 2 – Make the Skirt:
Cut a strip of fabric from selvage to selvage {size 2 – 12″, size 3 – 13″, size 4 – 14″, size 5 – 14.5″, size 6 – 15.5″}.
Sew two short ends together, right sides facing, and finish raw edge with a zigzag or serger.
Finish top and bottom edges with a zigzag or a serger. Fold bottom edge to the wrong side by 1″ and topstitch to hem.
Fold top edge to the wrong side by 1.25″ and press. Topsitch, leaving a 1.5″ gap.
Insert elastic {size 2 – 19″, size 3 – 19.5″, size 4 – 20″, size 5 – 20.75″, size 6 – 21.5″} with a safety pin.
Zigzag ends of elastic together.
Close elastic casing by topstitching.
Step 3 – Form the Supergirl Belt
cut a 3″ strip of yellow fleece long enough to go around your model’s waist + 1″. Cut out two belt buckle pieces and pin wrong sides together and sew along raw edges.
Sew strips of Velcro on the back edges as shown.
