Baby Sundress Tutorial (Free Pattern) Easy to Sew

This baby sundress tutorial is an easy sew and perfect for baby during the warm months of the year. This perfect addition to baby clothes and is a great staple for summer for baby to stay cool and move freely.
This adorable little sundress is sure to be a summer staple for your baby girl. Or, pair it with a long sleeve tee and leggings for a perfect layering piece in cooler weather.
The dress is sewn from soft jersey knit fabric. I’ve finished off the neckline and arm openings with a simple wrap around binding out of some scraps of contrasting jersey knit. The gathered skirt can be sewn from jersey knit or a light weight cotton woven.
YOU WILL NEED:
- 1/3 yard jersey knit fabric, preferably with lycra
- Sewing Essentials (like pins, thread, etc.)

Baby Sundress Tutorial:
Step 1 – Cut out the Following
You will need to assemble the free sewing pattern. For instructions on how to assemble the sewing pattern click here.
Cut the following for the baby dress
Then, cut 2 on fold of bodice.
Cut 2 skirt panels.
Cut strips of jersey knit (across the grain) that are 1 1/4″ wide and long enough to bind the neckline and 2 arm openings.
Step 2 – Sew the Following
Seam allowances are 3/8″. Use a ball point needle for sewing knits and a stretch stitch on a sewing machine or a serger. Hem and topstitch with a stretch stitch or double needle.
With right sides together, pin front to back at one shoulder. Stitch.
Stitch binding to the right side of the baby knit sundress neckline, right sides facing, stretching the binding very gently (do NOT stretch the neckline).
Wrap the binding around the seam allowance to the wrong side and press.
Topstitch the binding in place along the edge, being sure to catch the raw edge of the binding strip on the back.
Carefully trim the excess binding on the wrong side. You’re now halfway through this baby sundress tutorial!
Step 3 – Finish the baby dress bodice
With right sides together, sew the second shoulder seam to the baby sundress tutorial.
Bind the two arm openings in the same manner as the neckline.
Sew the side seams, right sides together.
Step 4 – Sew the Skirt and complete this baby sundress tutorial
With right sides facing, sew the side seams of the skirt.
Press up 1″ of the bottom edge to the wrong side for a hem. Topstitch hem in place.
Sew 2 rows of basting stitches along the top edge of the skirt.
Pull the bobbin threads to gather the top edge of the skirt so that it is the same length as the lower edge of the bodice.
With right sides together, pin the skirt to the lower edge of the bodice. Sew and turn right side out.
