Inspired by Disney’s Moana – this Moana Costume tutorial is easy to follow and has a longer top with straps to make it comfortable to wear. This pattern comes in girl sizes 2 to 6! This pattern uses knit fabric which allows you to keep some edges raw – it won’t fray.

Moana Costume Tutorial
Cut
1 front and 1 back on the fold EACH from print fabric and solid (lining) fabric
2 straps from print fabric
rectangle of print fabric for sash
large rectangle of solid fabric wide enough to tie around waist for the overskirt
Sew
Seam allowances are 3/8″ / 1 cm.
Pin the front bodice to the back bodice, right sides together. Sew side seams.
Repeat with the lining pieces.
To create the straps, fold lengthwise with right sides facing. Sew the long edge.
Turn right side out and press.
Pin the straps to the top of the bodice. I used safety pins.
Try the bodice on your model to determine the best placement and length.
Baste the straps in place, right sides together.
With the bodice right side out, slip it inside the lining bodice (still inside out), so that you have right sides facing and side seams are aligned. Ensure that the back bodice is facing the back lining bodice and the front bodice is facing the front lining bodice. The straps are tucked inside.
Stitch along the top edge.
Turn right side out and press. If you desire, you can topstitch the top edge and fold under the bottom edge to hem.
Complete the costume by tying on the over skirt cut from the lining fabric and the sash cut from the print fabric. No need to finish any of the raw edges; knit fabric does not fray. Pick up some dollar store accessories and you are ready for your luau!
