These jumbo ABC Baby Blocks are a great toy for baby! When my little one started grabbing at everything, I wanted to make something soft, safe, and sweet for those tiny hands. These jumbo blocks became an instant favorite, easy to squish, toss, and cuddle. They’re just the right size for tummy time, learning letters, or stacking (and knocking down, of course).

You don’t need fancy gear, just some fabric scraps, a bit of stuffing, and a quiet afternoon. I’ve included the free pattern and a simple step-by-step tutorial to make it easy to follow, even during nap time. It’s the kind of project that reminds you why you started sewing in the first place, to make something real, something loved.

To create your own ABC baby blocks,

YOU WILL NEED:

  • Cuddle fleece
  • Satin or other contrasting fabric, I used some lining fabric I had leftover from a dress
  • Double sided fusible web (eg, Heat ‘n’ Bond)
  • 4″ foam. I bought a piece from a local upholstery store and cut it into 4″ cubes with a serrated bread knife
  • Get the free pattern here.
Supplies needed. I love these giant blocks you can make for baby. So cute and a great DIY idea for a baby to play with. Love sewing for baby.

Step 1 – Cut out ABC Baby Blocks pieces, begin to sew

Print out your pattern and letter templates by clicking here. Cut out 6 squares using the pattern piece or measure a square 4.75″x4.75″ (12 cm x 12 cm)

Step 2 – Trace the Letter onto Fusible Web

tracing the letter

Trace the letters for the ABC Baby Blocks on the fusible web (it will be reversed). Apply the fusible web to the contrast fabric following manufacturers instructions.

Step 3 – Cut and Prepare the Applique

Cut out letter and remove paper backing.

Step 4 – Fuse Letter to Fleece Square

fusing the letter to the square

Apply the letter to one of the cuddle fleece squares. Use a press cloth so that the iron doesn’t directly touch the cuddle fleece or it will melt. I use an old piece of a pillowcase.

Step 5 – Zigzag Around the Letter

Sew around the edge of the letter with a tight zigzag stitch.

Step 6 – Assemble the Cube Sides

assembling the cube

Assembly the remaining 5 blocks to the block you just appliqued as shown, right sides together, using a 3/8″ or 1 cm seam allowance. To keep your corners sharp, start and stop sewing each seam 3/8″ or 1 cm from the edge.

Step 7 – Form the Cube

With right sides together, bring the sides, top, and bottom towards the appliqued block and stitch. You will now have a cube with a single side open.

Step 8 – Stuff and Finish the ABC Baby Blocks
